I will continue to post here when I have a series of pics that tell a story, but I've started a new photo blog where the idea is to post a pic or two every day.  They will be mostly nature pics.

Beach Bums

Not Summer Yet

It's still not summer yet, but today was sunny at least.  I had to get outside and snap a few shots.

Lighthouses on the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is famous for it's lighthouses.  The infamous Diamond Shoals have sunk many a ship resulting in the area being nicknamed "Graveyard of the Atlantic" and construction of one of the tallest lighthouses in the world on Hatteras Island.   For more information click here.  Members of my mother's family were the first keepers at this historic lighthouse.

The lighthouse on Ocracoke Island is the shortest of the group.  It was designed to welcome ships to a safe harbor unlike the Hatteras lighthouse which was built tall to ward off ships from the Shoals.  It was just off of Ocracoke Island that the infamous Blackbeard was finally brought to rest.

Finally I've included pics of the Bodie (pronounced like body) Island Lighthouse.  It has just undergone a huge restoration and will be available for climbing this spring for the first time in over 25 years.  The last few shots are some of my very first attempts at night shots with stars in the background.  It's tough work.

Eden is burning

My first job with the National Park Service was at Moraine Park campground in Rocky Mountain National Park.  Rocky is a beautiful park situated just over an hour from Denver, Colorado.  I fell in love with Moraine Park the first time I saw it and swore I would return.  Five years later I reported to work there.  It is one of the most special places on earth to me so it was with great sadness that I learned that Moraine Park is currently on fire. Work with the NPS has led me away but I will return.  I will forever consider Colorado my home.

The 'Fern Lake Fire', as it is being called, started a couple of months ago in a more remote area of the park. Fern Lake is a beautiful spot as well.  The fire has spread to encompass over 3,500 acres in the last few days.  The town of Estes Park is now in danger.  I hope it is subdued before it reaches town. As for the park, it will survive.  Nature renews.

Hurricane Sandy

A few pics of hurricane Sandy in Nags Head, North Carolina.  We did not get hit too hard this time, but still got minor flooding.  This was a few hours after the peak of the storm.

 

 

 

 

 

Pettigrew

These pics were taken on a recent camping trip at Pettigrew State Park in eastern North Carolina on Lake Phelps.  There are some really beautiful cypress trees there.  I'll let the pictures do the talking.
